Mark C. Hulbert is the founding partner of the Firm’s Los Angeles office and a member of the Transactional Department, the Real Estate Practice Group, the Distressed Real Estate Practice Group, the Restructuring and Workouts Practice Group, the Investment Funds Practice Group and the Hotels and Resorts Practice Group. 

 

Mr. Hulbert has represented clients in a broad cross-section of real estate projects, including lenders and borrowers in loans ranging from under $1M to over $100M, landlords and tenants in leasing transactions involving retail, office, commercial and resort properties, and buyers and sellers in purchases and sales of office buildings, hotels, resorts, home developments and shopping centers.  He has also represented owners, developers and investors in all aspects of real estate joint ventures, ranging from the negotiation of the initial venture agreement through the acquisition, development and disposition of the assets.  Early in his career, Mr. Hulbert represented borrowers, lenders and creditors committees in bankruptcy matters, and he has also worked on multiple significant matters involving distressed loan situations, including workouts and exercise of enforcement remedies.

 

In response to the Firm’s distressed real estate initiatives, Mr. Hulbert has taken the lead on advising on the implications of the various governmental actions pertaining to the stabilization of the financial markets.

 

Mr. Hulbert joined the Firm as a partner in October 2005.  Previously, Mr. Hulbert practiced real estate law as an associate in Los Angeles with the law firms of Dewey Ballantine and Pircher, Nichols & Meeks and in Austin, Texas with the law firm of Drenner & Golden Stuart Wolff LLP. Mr. Hulbert began his legal career by spending a year as a bankruptcy lawyer at Sidley Austin LLP.

 

Mr. Hulbert is a graduate of the University of Hertforshire (B.A., Hons, 1987), University of Oklahoma (M.A., 1990; Ph.D., 1992) and Columbia University (J.D., 1997).  Prior to attending law school, Mr. Hulbert taught philosophy for seven years, first as a graduate student and later as an Assistant Professor at the University of Central Arkansas, where he published several professional articles and gave presentations and papers at regional and national conferences.

 

Mr. Hulbert is licensed in California and New York.
