Our Future Pure Plays
OUR LITIGATION PRACTICE
Our litigation practice has a major presence in financial services matters and has a significant real estate component that weaves into our real estate pure play.
The practice is headed by Allan Taffet, who is: a Harvard Law School graduate – a former U.S. Attorney in the Southern District of New York – and a former practitioner at Cravath, Swaine & Moore. Through the years, Allan has been joined by seven other litigation partners, which now comprise an approximately ten lawyer practice group. The group’s clients are largely financial institutions and real estate companies.

OUR TAX PRACTICE
Our tax practice has deep expertise in virtually all U.S. tax issues. In addition, our tax team has particular expertise in cross-border matters (both in-bound and out-bound). Finally, our tax team is particularly skilled in real estate matters, which fits nicely with our real estate pure play.
In the tax world, almost all great tax departments are buried in major law firms or major accounting firms and, as almost any non-mega-client knows, are not set up to offer responsive and quality service to anyone other than a major client on a major transaction. It is just the way things are. Yet at the same time, many clients are fearful of not working with a major law firm or a major accounting firm because they are concerned that the level of quality simply will not be there outside of a major law or accounting firm. We have spoken to many of our clients about their tax needs. They are quite simple. Our clients want a tax lawyer:
Who is brilliant and creative
Who simplifies complicated tax concepts and makes them understandable
Who does not speak in incomprehensible “tax-ese”, citing code sections, but instead converts “tax-ese” to English
Who can come up with a structure that respects and enhances the business deal
Who can provide ethical and honest ways of reducing their tax burdens
Who is very responsive so transactions can move quickly
Who does not run up a huge legal bill all the time
We have built our practice with the foregoing client needs in mind and hired Stephen Land, a superstar lawyer and industry luminary, to launch this practice for us. There is no question that Stephen is hands down one of the few top tax lawyers in the world. Stephen’s credentials include:
Education at Harvard College (mathematics major), Harvard Law School, and Harvard Business School
Top 5% of his class in all of the foregoing
Development of practice expertise at Sullivan & Cromwell
At Linklaters (launching and building the U.S. tax practice at one of the world’s largest firms, and becoming recognized as one of the leading international tax lawyers in the United States).
This is now punctuated by being elected as an officer of the Tax Section of the New York State Bar Association – to become Chair in 2016 – one of the most prestigious tax positions anywhere for a tax lawyer.
Stephen is now joined by two tax associates (both from Linklaters) and the client response to these associates has been magnificent.
OUR CORPORATE PRACTICE
Our Corporate practice handles M&A, private equity and corporate acquisitions and dispositions. In addition, one of the crown jewels of the Firm is our corporate real estate practice, which is devoted to joint ventures and similar transactions in the real estate world.
The practice is co-headed by Terri Adler and Patrick Duval.
The Firm is a worldwide industry leader in joint ventures and similar transactions in the real estate world. Indeed, the corporate real estate team has worked on thousands of co-venture transactions during the Firm’s history and we believe our expertise and skill set is without par at any other law firm.
OUR BANKRUPTCY PRACTICE
Our bankruptcy practice is known for acquiring assets out of bankruptcy, as well as addressing the fraudulent conduct of debtors. Our bankruptcy practice is also well-known for its expertise in the real estate world, which of course melds well with our real estate pure play.
The chair of our bankruptcy practice, Kirk Brett, is an effective and practical lawyer -- with deep experience in all aspects of insolvency, credibility in the courtroom, excellent judgment, and a track record of finding creative solutions for our clients.
OUR ENVIRONMENTAL PRACTICE
Our environmental practice is known for successfully and efficiently resolving complicated environmental issues that arise in a variety of transactional and litigation matters. Of course, our environmental practice is closely aligned with, and is an integral part of, our real estate work; indeed, real estate is a specialty of our environmental practice. This all fits in very well with our real estate pure play.
The head of our environmental practice, J. Andrew Stephenson, has great expertise in resolving environmental issues that arise in real estate transactions. Andy’s approach to any environmental legal matter is to assess the issues quickly and to propose solutions that work.
OUR TAX EXEMPT ORGANIZATIONS PRACTICE
Our Tax Exempt Organizations practice has great expertise in the unique regulatory, economic and legal issues of tax exempt organizations (public charities and private foundations), including with respect to internal governance issues and disputes. It is also closely aligned with our real estate practice; indeed, we created a separate Tax Exempt Real Estate Practice, recognizing that many not-for-profit entities have real estate issues that require a combination of legal expertise in both the real estate and not for profit areas.
Regarding this practice area, there are only a few high-quality not-for-profit practices in New York City and all of them are similar in providing excellent service but generally at very high prices. Recognizing a niche in the market which can provide outstanding service at an affordable price, the Firm brought on the very highly regarded David Samuels to launch this practice group. David’s accolades include Harvard Law School and a lengthy in-house stint as Deputy Chief of the New York Attorney General’s Charities Bureau.
